Wanderers sign captain Andre Rampersad to new deal

Halifax Wanderers captain Andre Rampersad isn't going anywhere.

The club announced on Friday that they'd signed the Trinidad and Tobago international to a new deal through 2026, with a further option for 2027. Rampersad is already the club's all-time appearance leader, donning Halifax blue 140 times since he joined in 2019, and is all but guaranteed to build on that milestone with his new contract in place.

Rampersad, 29, made 23 appearances last season, playing nearly 1,900 minutes while collecting two goals. He's recorded three goals and six assists during his time with the Wanderers.

The midfielder has been Halifax's captain for several seasons and remains the club's only centurion. And Rampersad's impact has also been felt on the international stage as he has been called upon nearly 20 times by Trinidad and Tobago since 2023, including against Canada for last year's Copa America qualifier.

However, 2024 was a difficult year for the Wanderers as the club failed to qualify for playoffs.

Speaking to The Wanderer Grounds podcast following the club's last match of the season, Rampersad stressed the importance of flipping the page after a challenging campaign.

2025, he said, had already begun.

“It started today,” Rampersad said after Halifax's 2-1 win over York United FC. "You look at the previous games where we were up and we lose it in the end. Today, we spoke about it before the game. The next season starts today and I think, you know, the guys showed it. We stuck it out and got the 2-1 win.”

There have already been several key changes to Halifax's squad: long-time players Aidan Daniels and Zachary Fernandez have departed after three seasons, while regulars like Dan Nimick, Cale Loughrey and Yann Fillion will not be returning. Former Wanderer Riley Ferrazzo, who played in Halifax for two seasons, was announced by York United on Thursday.

But reinforcements are on the way.

The club announced in December that Pacific star defender Thomas Meilleur-Giguère had signed a two-year contract. On Wednesday, the Wanderers also shared that goalkeeper Rayane Yesli had also been signed to a one-year deal plus option.

The Wanderers are expected to announce more players in the coming weeks.
